I have wanted go sailing for a very long time. I don’t know exactly what it is that makes sailing so special. I mean, I knew for a fact I was going to get seasick, I didn’t know the people I was going with and Sydney is the other side of the world. Anyway, I knew I could never stop thinking about it, so of I went!  And of course all my worries where put the shame already the first night when I went out with the other new crew members. Don (the muscle man) his wife Barbara (who goes through books like a termite) and of course Toni (the captain).

We didn’t have any wind for the fist couple of days, and had to use the engine to go to the Whitsunday Islands. There was a lot of knob making and trying to learn how to tie a bowlen and a double half hitch… and a lot of listening to Irish folk songs and reading books. Among other things my favorite book: “how to catch a fish”. After a few days of trawling we still didn’t have any kind of fishes in sight. Finally we discovered the secret, and caught a Spanish Mackerel and a Trivally. The secret has do be well kept, but I can say that it has something to do with throwing out very old meat.

We went snorkeling and diving a couple of times, and saw more fish, and in a greater variety than I have ever seen. They aren’t used to people, so they some up really close, and don’t seem to be scared at all. I think I was the one who was more sacred than anyone. I finally got in the water for the first time, knowing that there are sharks and everything. But 5 minutes into my swimming I hear one of the crew members from Little Swan saying: “aah see, there a sting ray right under your feet”. I’ve never gotten out the water that fast..! After that I was pulled up to the mast – great view..

We went to a lot of the different Whitsunday Islands, and walked some of the beaches, the rainforest and saw the beautiful mangrove islands. The sunsets and the stars are the best part for me, living in a big city I just never get to see these things. We have arrived in Cairns with great wind from behind 2 days 2 early, and are waiting for new crew and getting to yacht ready for new adventures. We will now be heading north towards Cook Town and Darwin.
